Sweden’s TTS Ship’s Equipment, headquartered in Gothenburg, has won a contract from Stena Line Scandinavia AB for the turnkey delivery of a Weather Deck Ramp (Linkspan) for the Stena Terminal at Verko, located close to Karlskrona in Sweden. This is the first Linkspan ordered from TTS.
The Linkspan, which is due to become operational by April 25th next year (2005), will be used to load and unload trucks on a second level simultaneously to/from the Stena-owned vessels Stena Baltica and Stena Nautica, which operate on Stena’s Karlskrona (Sweden) to Gydnia (Poland) service. The Stena Nautica (ex European Ambassador) can already unload on a two-tier basis and is therefore ready for when the Linkspan comes into operation. Meanwhile, the Stena Baltica (ex Koningen Beatrix) has been converted in Poland to enable her to also use the two-tier Linkspan to reduce loading/unloading times.
The traffic between these two ports has increased dramatically over recent years and Stena Line has reacted to this by using two new ships on this service. The existing Linkspan at the Verko Terminal allows for loading/unloading operations from the vessels’ main deck. This new development is for the Weather Deck Ramp to be added to the existing Linkspan, allowing vehicles from the vessels’ weather deck to be unloaded simultaneously.
The vessels will be berthed with the bow towards the existing Linkspan for both loading and unloading operations. Special attention has been given to the different bow arrangements of the vessels, the Stena Baltica is equipped with double leaf side doors swinging astern, while the Stena Nautica has a bow visor, which swings upwards. Both vessels have bow ramps, which interact with the existing Linkspan.
TTS Ships Equipment, which is part of Norway’s TTS Marine ASA, will supply the Weather Deck Ramp, which comprises a Fixed Access Ramp and an outer Movable Linkspan. The equipment will be erected at the Verko Terminal during March and April 2005.
